The evolution of 2 spp belonging to the gen Tripterygion and some spp of the gen Blennius is discussed. Tripterygion tripteronotus and T. xanthosoma have very similar morphological characters yet live in 2 distinct niches. This probably results from 2 separate immigrations into the Mediterranean at different eras after the glacial age. After establishing reproductive barriers these populations would have evolved into 2 distinct spp. In contrast the spp of the gen Blennius were endemic in the Mediterranean and their evolution must have taken place after the end of the glacial age. During this lapse of time, multiple differentiations which might have taken place would account for the presence of sibling spp having comparable morphological characters but... |

The five known species of the African genus Chondrolepis Mabille are extensively described and figured and two new species are added. Keys are given to the males and females separately. Most species are restricted to montane habitats, mainly in East Africa. Based on their phylogeny the geographic history of the species is analyzed. It is concluded that the distribution agrees with the predictions to be derived from the hypotheses that montane forests were very much restricted during the last Glacial Period of the Northern Hemisphere, later on becoming more widespread than at present, and that the contact between the Cameroun highlands and the highlands of East Africa was through species that temporarily lived in the intervening lowland forests and not... |

In the world, the Ampelisca genus is constituted by more than 140 species, which are found between 0 to 4000 m depth. Phylogeny, biology and ecology are the most important interest in this genus. The present analysis of new and older collections (E. Chevreux) have permitted to describe 11 new species. 41 species are listed in the north-eastern Atlantic fauna. These are different arguments to think that Ampelisca groups was actually in speciation. Two groups issued from a phenetic analysis are discriminated by their apomorphic levels. More than of the third are endemic species. 21 species are present only in one of the five biogeographic region. 23 species are limited to the continental shelf, 34 live up to the first 1000 meters and 4 are bathyal. 2 species... |

The copepodite antennule development of representatives of 6 harpacticoid families is studied and discussed in detail and that of 8 genera of harpacticoids from 7 families is schematically illustrated. Twenty-seven genera out of 17 harpacticoid families are compared on the basis of own investigations and data from the literature. The origin of newly formed segments can be determined by seta numbers of segments, relative segment length, furrows indicating previous articulations and by the position of the segment which bears the proximal aesthetasc. There are 2 zones of segment formation, both located in the middle part of the first antenna. Normal segment formation takes place distally from the second, aesthetasc-bearing segment from C I to C II and... |

1. A phylogenetic hypothesis for the triclads is presented and the characters on which it is based are discussed. 2. The sister group of the Tricladida is formed by the Bothrioplanida, and together the two taxa share a sistergroup relationship with the Proseriata. 3. The monophyletic status of the suborder Tricladida is supported by several derived features (Fig. 1., characters 9—12), including a unique embryological development and the presence of a marginal adhesive zone. 4. It is postulated that the Maricola is the primitive sister group of the Terricola and the Paludicola together and that the Paludicola represents the most advanced group within the Tricladida. Characters supporting these hypotheses are discussed (Fig. 1, characters 14-16, and 20-22,... |

The Choleva agilis-group is revised. The three species are redescribed and their zoogeography is discussed. The phylogeny of the three species is hypothesized. Choleva jailensis Jeannel, 1923 and C. agilis clermonti van der Wiel, 1931 are new synonyms of C. agilis (Illiger, 1798). C. lederiana var. brevicollis Krogerus, 1926, is a new synonym of C. lederiana Reitter, 1901. The cavernicolous taxon gracilenta Szymczakowski, 1957, formerly regarded as a subspecies of C. lederiana, is transferred to C. septentrionis Jeannel, 1923. |

A new family Cristacoxidae is proposed to accommodate the monotypic genera Cristacoxa gen. nov., Noodtorthopsyllus Lang (ex Canthocamptidae) and Cubanocleta Petkovski (ex Laophontidae). Cristacoxa petkovskii gen. et spec. nov. is described on the basis of a single male collected from coralline sand of Bonaire, West Indies. N. psammophilus Noodt and C. noodti Petkovski are redescribed and refigured on the basis of new material from the Galápagos (Isla Santa Cruz), the West Indian Islands (Curaçao, Klein Curaçao, Bonaire) and the Canary Islands (El Hierro, Tenerife). The new family is characterised by the presence of an outer spinous process on the first antennular segment, the absence of the antennary exopod, the uniramous mandibular palp, the presence of... |

A phylogenetic analysis of the subfamilies of the family Braconidae Nees, 1812 is presented. The analysis employing 96 phylogenetically informative characters was performed using the computerized parsimony programmes PAUP and Hennig86. The cladograms obtained show that the Braconidae can be divided into three major groups of subfamilies. These are a lineage comprising the mainly ectoparasitic cyclostomes and relatives, and two advanced endoparasitic groups, both apparently derived from somewhere near the endoparasitic cyclostome subfamily Rogadinae Foerster, 1862 sensu stricto. As a result of the phylogenetic analysis subfamily rank is given to the Exothecinae Foerster, 1862 (including the Hormiini Foerster, 1862), the Rhyssalinae Foerster, 1862 (including... |

SLUYS, R., 1992. Synopsis of the freshwater triclads of the Caribbean (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Paludicola). Studies Nat. Hist. Caribbean Region 71, Amsterdam, 1992: 1-23. An account is given of the five species of freshwater triclads which are known from the Caribbean region, including taxonomic descriptions, karyological, ecological, and biogeographic information, supplemented with remarks on observations of previous workers and comparisons with similar species. Records of unidentified specimens are summarized. Caribbean freshwater planarians belong to the genus Girardia; the phylogenetic relationships within this genus remain to be resolved. It is argued that present distributional patterns in Caribbean Girardia’s may be the result of vicariance... |

An alternative proposition for the analysis of the diagnostic states of the pronotum in the Centrotinae and Membracinae (sensu Strümpel) is presented. In this analysis, a linear transformation series is proposed for this character, departing from the state found in Tolania Stal, 1858 changing to an intermediate state in Centrotinae, which is still treated as plesiomorphic when compared with the one found in Membracinae. The transformation series thus defined, clarifies the problems related to the monophyly of the Membracidae, which is herein supported by the state of pronotum previously used to define the Centrotinae. This later taxon is treated as paraphyletic. The monophyly of the Membracinae is unquestioned, but its sister group is still unknown.... |

A recent phylogenetic analysis of selected groups of cyclostome braconid wasps by Whitfield (1992) was used to investigate the evolution of biological characters associated with the transition from ecto- to endoparasitism. Incorrect methodology in character polarization and incorrect scoring of characters, and a failure to include other available data are shown by reanalysis of a corrected data matrix to compromise Whitfield's conclusion that endoparasitism evolved twice in his selected set of taxa. Greater rigor and the use of additional informative characters are advocated to obtain more robust phylogeny upon which conclusions regarding biological evolution can be more reliably based. |

The family Archimonocelididae Meixner, 1938 has been revised. The family contains two subfamilies, each comprising two genera: the Archimonocelidinae with Archimonocelis Meixner, 1938 and Meidiama Marcus, 1946, and the Calviriinae subfam. nov. with Asilomaria Karling, 1966 and Calviria gen. nov. with 20, 2, 1, and 3 species, respectively, 13 of which are new to science. The type species of the family is redescribed. Material of all the Archimonocelididae genera has been studied and supplementary remarks are made on some known species. The karyotype of 14 species is described. Archimonocelis has a cosmopolitan distribution while Meidiama is restricted to the South American coast, Calviria to the Mediterranean, and Asilomaria to the Pacific North American... |

The Niphargus transitivus group includes 12 groundwaterdwelling species. It is defined by an upright body position during locomotion, a small, stout body with short appendages, except for long coxae and dactyli, coxae V-VI equilobate or posterolobate, accessory flagellum subject to reduction, and the body endowed with adaptations for volvation ( = ability to enroll into a ball). The biogeography of this southeastern European group of species is discussed and a cladistic analysis of the group is presented. Some cases of parallel character evolution in groundwater amphipods are mentioned. The inference of biogeographic and phylogenetic information in elucidating the evolutionary history of the group is hampered by inconsistency of the data. One of the... |
